四、阅读理解。
You either have it, or you don't — a sense of direction, that is. But why can some people find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others get lost in the next street?
Scientists say people are all born with a sense of direction, but they are not sure how it works. One theory (理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. The research which has been carried out at the University of Liverpool supports this idea. It suggests that if people don't develop their sense of direction, they will lose it gradually.
"Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around," said Jim Martland, a research director of the project. "However, if they are not allowed out alone or are driven everywhere in a car, they will never develop the skill."
Jim Martland also emphasized (强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He gave the following suggestions:
★ If you are using a map, turn it so it connects with the way you are facing.
★ If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
★ Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines, such as streets in a town or walls in the countryside, to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone. Note some landmarks such as a hotel or a tower clock which can help you find out where you are.
