五、阅读理解。
Tim Linhart is an American. He worked as an ice sculptor (雕刻家) for many years. In the late 1990s, he went to Sweden to create some sculptures for an ice hotel. There he met his future wife and decided to stay.
In 1998, Tim began sculpting a violin from ice. It took him about five to six days to sculpt something like a violin. The violin was so large that he had to use strings (弦) from a piano. He tried playing it when it was finished, and was so excited by the beautiful sound it made. He ran to tell his friends, but they all thought he was crazy! However, Tim knew that he had to create more.
It was not long before Tim had made enough different instruments to create his own orchestra (管弦乐队). It included violins, guitars, drums and so on. To make sure the instruments did not melt (融化), the orchestra had to perform in a cold environment. Many members of the orchestra wore gloves while they were playing. Some of them did not, as it was hard to play an instrument like the violin with gloves on!
During one of the orchestra's concerts, they found that the listeners increased the room temperature. This was because of human body heat and breath. Some instruments began to melt. The concert was not a success. Tim decided to build his own concert hall. The temperature there is able to remain at -5℃ throughout the concert.
Tim's orchestra now performs every year, not only in Sweden but also in the USA and Italy.
