Ⅰ. 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从短文后各题所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
The Invention of the Bicycle
The bicycle is a popular way to get around. But do you know how it was invented? In the early 1800s, there were no bicycles like we have today. People walked or rode horses.
In 1817, a German inventor named Karl Drais 1 a new kind of “running machine”. He designed it with a wooden frame (框架) and two wheels, but it had no pedals (踏板). People had to 2 it forward with their feet while sitting on a simple seat. This early model was quite 3 to control and turn smoothly. Many people found it hard to ride. As a result, the “running machine” soon became 4.
In 1861, French brothers Pierre and Ernest Michaux made an improvement. They created the first bicycle with pedals. This invention made it much easier to move forward. However, this new design also had its problems. The front wheel was very big, which made the bicycle tall. When riders hit a small stone on the road, they were likely to lose control and 5. Also, these bicycles were 6 to make. Only a few people could afford (买得起) them.
In 1885, Englishman John Kemp Starley invented a better bicycle. It had two wheels of the 7 size and a chain to move the back wheel. This was the modern bicycle we know today. The new design greatly improved the balance. People would ride 8.
Thanks to these 9 people, we can enjoy riding bicycles now. Today, bicycles are not only convenient but also environmentally 10, making them a great choice for transportation.
