I'm a Bolivian girl, Joshua Fernandez. This Chinese New Year, not flying back home like many other foreigners, I brought my parents to China for the first time.
In Shenzhen, we visited landmarks (地标) like the Talent Park and the Civic Centre. My parents were surprised at the city's rapid development after learning about its short history.
From Shenzhen, we flew to Beijing—my first time in the Chinese capital too! We visited the Temple of Heaven, the Olympic Stadium, and Qianmen Street, a pedestrian street for shopping. The city was very cold at this time of a year and filled with tourists, but that didn't stop us from experiencing the best of Beijing.
Next, we travelled to Xi'an. My parents spent their time enjoying the historic sites (历史遗迹), fully losing themselves in the city's great history. We spent the rest of our stay in Xi'an in the Great Tang All Day Mall, buying something special and trying local snacks.
In just two weeks, my parents experienced both ancient and modern China. This trip was only a part of this large and rich country. I'm already looking forward to planning their next visit.

We arrived in the hot, wet city—Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand. All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.
Tuesday, March 27th
Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruit and vegetables. Everything is so colourful, and we took lots of photos there! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train to Chiang Mai and stay there for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.
Friday, March 30th
Our bus ride to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life—no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here, but we must go home. I hope to be able to come back next year.
