Have you ever felt impatient or angry easily on a boiling hot day? This is sometimes called "emotional sunstroke" (情绪中暑)—it means high temperatures can "overheat" our emotions!
There are some typical symptoms (症状) of "emotional sunstroke". For example, it can be hard for you to sit still or relax, you might not feel like doing activities you usually enjoy.
Some studies show that when you get too hot, your body makes stress chemicals (化学物质). These chemicals make you ready to fight or run away—that's why you feel upset faster! If it's too hot at night, you may have trouble sleeping. Being sleepy the next day makes it easy to lose your temper. Sweating (出汗) takes away water and some important minerals (矿物质) from your body. Even a little lack of water and some minerals might make your head hurt or make you feel upset.
To cool down our emotions, you can try a few simple things.
◆ Keep your body cool. Stay in a cool place, like an air-conditioned room or under a big tree.
◆ Drink wisely: Sip (小口喝) water every hour. Add lemon pieces to make it tasty.
◆ Use the "5-5-5 rule": When you are upset, breathe in slowly for 5 seconds, wait 5 seconds, then breathe out for 5 seconds.
◆ Change plans: Play outside before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid the hottest time.
Remember, it's normal to feel a bit grumpy (脾气坏的) on a hot day. But with a few tips, we can keep our cool and enjoy the summer.
