五、阅读理解
It was September 2007. I was a new Grade Seven student. I was reading books after class by myself and my classmates were busy making new friends. I was doing well before the third lesson on the first day.
The teacher let us do a questionnaire with “get to know you” questions. I thought she would read them herself after class, so I felt safe to write about who I was. But after getting the questionnaires, she mixed (混合) them up and handed them out to the class. One by one, we read out the student’s name and then our two favourite answers. My questionnaire went to an unfriendly kid.
The first question was “What’s your favourite film?” Other kids wrote popular Disney films, but my answer was The Wizard of Oz (《绿野仙踪》), a 1939 film. The next question was “Where would you like to travel?” The others said “Australia” or “France”; I wrote, “Wherever a good book takes me.” The kids laughed loudly. My face was on fire. I just wanted to hide (躲藏) inside my schoolbag!
But then, someone from the back of the room said, “Guys, cut it out!” It was Michael Siever, a popular boy. Everyone was quiet. Michael then turned to the teacher and said, “There’s no need of doing this activity if we make fun of each other.”
Seventeen years have passed (过去). I don’t remember (记得) the names of most people in that class. But Michael and I still chat with each other on the phone from time to time. He is not only a friend of mine but also a hero.
