When you think of Yue opera, words like “old” and “boring” may come to mind. “I know a lot of old people are interested in it, but it’s just not for young people of my age,” said a 25-year-old netizen.

But a Yue opera show, “New Dragon Gate Inn”(《新龙门客栈》), has been changing many young people’s minds about this art form. Chen Lijun and Li Yunxiao, two of the main cast members(演员), have even become social media stars.
The show is produced by Xiaobaihua, one of China’s top Yue opera troupes(剧团). Innovation(创新)may be an important reason behind its popularity. Unlike traditional Yue opera shows, the setting of “New Dragon Gate Inn” is designed as an inn. The audience(观众)find themselves to be the guests at the “inn”. They sit quite close to the performers(表演者)and are sometimes given the chance to interact(互动)with them. What’s more, all the roles(角色)are played by women. This fresh, unusual viewing experience has drawn young people to the theatre. “At first, most of the audience were opera fans. But slowly, more and more nontraditional theatergoers(戏迷)began to attend,” Chen said.
Xiaobaihua has also tried to bring Yue opera to the world stage. It has successfully brought some famous foreign plays and Yue opera together. One example is “Coriolanus and Du Liniang”(《寇流兰和杜丽娘》), which joined a Western play(by Shakespeare)and a Chinese play(by Tang Xianzu). The show was on in Europe in 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary(周年纪念)of the deaths of the two world-famous playwrights.
