B
Have you seen the picture of the Colosseum (角斗场) in your history book? It’s in Rome, the capital (首都) of Italy. It is oval - shaped (椭圆形) and covers 20,000 square meters. It’s 57 meters high and could hold about 90,000 people. It was an amazing building at that time and was listed on the World Heritage List in 1980.

The Colosseum was built between 72 and 79 AD. It was used by slave (奴隶) owners and freemen to watch animal or slave fights in ancient Roman Empire. It’s said that when the Colosseum opened for the first time, 3,000 slaves fought against (反) 5,000 dangerous animals like tigers and lions. Few of the slaves could survive. Slave - to - slave fights were held here, too. The victor (胜利者) could go out of it, but it was not sure for the others. Wasn’t it cruel (残忍的)?
There is a movie called Gladiator, which shows the true history to people. If you want to know about the past of the Colosseum, it may be the best choice.
Today, many tourists come to the Colosseum for a visit. They feel deeply sorry for the slaves who lost their lives there and also deeply hate (憎恨) the people who held the cruel activities. So how happy and lucky we are to live in a peaceful country!
