D(2024·重庆阶段)
This is our first English lesson in my new school. Sunlight shines through the windows when our English teacher Ms Li writes the saying “Learning without thinking is of no use. —Mencius(孟子)” on the blackboard. “Please write this sentence down. It’s useful for your junior high days,” she says with a warm smile.
My pencil scratches(匆匆地写) quickly at first, and then I freeze(愣住). Wait—Mencius? No, this should be Confucius! My heart beats. Around me, all of my classmates keep writing. Should I speak up? What if the teacher gets angry on our first day? I think to myself.
“Why don’t you write, Wang Han?” Ms Li asks me. I look up, meeting her encouraging eyes. My hands sweat(流汗) but I remember Grandpa’s advice, “Truth(真相) shines brighter than fear.” So I tell myself that I know the saying a lot and I need to say something about it. Then ______ “Ms Li, there’s a mistake. The writer is Confucius, not Mencius.”
The classroom becomes quiet at once. Everyone looks at me. However, Ms Li starts to smile.
“How careful a learner you are! In fact, this is your first test. In junior high school, I want you all to be brave(勇敢的) thinkers, not just followers.” She adds Confucius’ name next to Mencius’.
