Once upon a time, there was a poor soldier. One day he met a devil who promised to make him rich. Just at that time he saw a large bear running toward him. He shot it with his rifle. Then the devil said, “Now you must wear the bear’s skin for seven years. You must not take a bath. You must not cut off your beard. And you must not cut your hair. If you die during these seven years, I shall take your soul. If you stay alive, you are free and rich.”
The devil took off his green jacket and gave it to the soldier, saying, “The pocket in it is always full of gold. You can spend as much as you like.” Then the devil vanished. The solider put on the bearskin and started to walk around the country.
During the first year he did not look ugly, but during the second year he smelled bad and looked ugly. In the fourth year, he saw an old man crying and helped the old man by giving some gold. The old man was grateful and asked him to choose one of his three daughters as his wife.
When the two eldest daughters saw him, they ran away. The youngest said, “I will marry him. Father, you made him a promise. I must help you keep the promise.” The soldier took a ring from his finger, cut it in half and gave her one half. He kept the other half himself. Then he left, saying, “I will walk around the country for three years. Please wait for me.”
Finally, on the last day of the seven years, the devil looked at him angrily but he kept his promise. After the devil washed him and cut his hair and beard, the soldier returned to the girl’s house. When he brought out his half of the ring, she took the other half. They married and lived happily.
