C(2025·江苏连云港期中)
In a small, remote town,a schoolboy and his classmates are having lunch at school. Their meals are simple but fresh. They can enjoy the fresh and healthy meals thanks to a special programme of the United Nations.
The boy is Tian Zhiping. He lives with his grandfather in the small town in Central China’s Hunan Province. His parents have left the town to work in the city.
The town is so remote that it was hard and expensive for local schools to get fresh food, especially fruit and vegetables. They could only provide packaged(包装好的)food for their students.
Luckily, things changed in 2018 when the WFP(World Food Programme)China office worked with local governments to start a new programme. This programme encouraged local farmers to play a role in providing school meals.
Tian Zhiping’s grandfather,Tian Qingxiang, became one of the 139 farmers chosen to provide vegetables for local schools. The programme gives him seeds and fertilizer(种子和肥料)worth 500 yuan a year. “Now my grandchild gets in-season,fresh,safe and healthy food that I grew in an eco-friendly(环保的)way,” Tian Qingxiang said. “And I can get about 6,000 yuan a year from selling crops.”
Over the past six years, about 8,000 children in several places including Guangxi,Gansu and Sichuan have taken part in similar programmes. These programmes hope to improve the health and development of children in poor areas, and help them grow up in healthier and more developed environments.
