B
Meet England's longest, best-known river
The River Thames (泰晤士河) is the longest river in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn (塞文河). But the Thames is the most famous. That's probably because it's in London, the capital city. The Thames goes through London and other parts of the south of England.
Some of the best-known places in London are by the Thames: the Big Ben clock on the north side of the river; the London Eye on the south side, with its view of the city; and St Paul's Cathedral (圣保罗大教堂). People built St Paul's Cathedral again after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Some of the bridges over the River Thames are also famous: Westminster Bridge, Tower Bridge and Millennium Bridge.
It's famous for art, too. Some of the UK's most well-known artists have painted the Thames, including Turner and Constable in the 18th and 19th centuries. Turner is famous for painting water—the sea and rivers, while Constable is famous as a painter of fields (田野) and forests.
