五、阅读理解。〔人与社会——历史、社会与文化〕
Qi pao, a dress with a history of over 100 years, has become a symbol of the beauty of Chinese women.
The illustrator(插画师)Lu Mei is also a qi pao lover, making paintings of a woman in qi pao for years. Her book Cheongsam with beautiful illustrations tells how the style of the dress has changed in the past 100 years.
Lu Mei has been interested in qi pao since she read a book by the famous writer Zhang Ailing (1920-1995). In 2007, when she was asked to draw the illustrations for a book by Zhang Ailing and the clothes in the book, Lu agreed and started her study on the dress. According to some books, people first wore qi pao in the late 1910s and it looked like the robes(长袍)which were long and wide and only worn by men at that time. In the 1930s, the dress was made into a different style-slimmer cuts and higher splits(开叉).
"Nowadays qi pao becomes a fashion choice for women and a symbol of Chinese culture once again, but the dress is different from that in the past. The dress now is much more close-fitting," Lu said.
Lu Mei loves qi pao, but she seldom wears it in her everyday life. Lu hopes readers can learn something meaningful behind the clothes instead of(而不是)just wearing the dress.
