Van Tilburg and his team did a study asking people to describe what boring people are like according to someone they knew. In the study, most people said that a boring person is quiet and doesn’t have a sense of humour.
Later studies showed that being seen as boring is a bad personality characteristic. And these people are often called introverts.
So why do some people think introverts are boring? Quiet people usually keep their lives secret and don’t like sharing their lives with others. This is different from what many cultures enjoy: being outgoing and welcome. Because of this, people might wrongly think that “quiet” means “boring”. They believe being very outgoing and sharing everything online shows people are fun.
However, thinking that being outgoing is better can be a mistake, according to another study. This idea may start when we are in our teenage years because we have the most friends and are popular with everyone at that time. This kind of popularity can make quiet people feel bad about not being so social (合群的).
In fact, introverts have something called a “quiet ego (自我)”. It helps them be able to put themselves in other people’s shoes and see all sides of problems. They not only care about themselves, but also care about others. Their kindness also brings them a feeling of long-lasting happiness.
It’s not right to think introverts are boring because introversion has many good points. Introverts are truer to themselves. Knowing being introverted is good can make people feel great about themselves. There can be happiness in being “boring” if you have a quiet, introverted personality.
