Ⅴ. 阅读理解
At the break of day, Ehemat Tohti, a 55-year-old electrical worker and his colleagues prepared their equipment and embarked on their journey into the heart of the Taklimakan Desert, China's largest desert, to begin a day of patrolling(巡逻).
They are responsible for checking and repairing a 220-kv transmission line(输电线) crossing this desert, also known as the "Sea of Death". "We need to cross the desert once a month to check the status of the 729 transmission towers in order to ensure a normal power supply(供电) for counties and villages located along the Taklimakan. The task is challenging, yet all worthwhile," Ehemat Tohti said.
In the autumn noon, the desert's surface is still searing hot, while the temperature between morning and evening has changed greatly. "At present, the temperature difference between morning and evening is about 20℃. It was especially cold when we set off. As we went further, the temperature rose, only to drop again in the evening. Therefore, it's completely necessary to take both thick and thin clothing," he said.
Since most of the route was impassable by car, they needed to ride motorcycles and hike to carry out their tasks. Walking through the desert was extremely difficult. "The harsh environment is not only unbearable for us, but also can easily cause frequent breakdowns of our motorcycles. Moreover, the hidden roots of red willow and populus euphratica trees, buried under the sand, often puncture the tires(刺穿轮胎), making an invisible risk," he said.
"The desert is beautiful, but it's also unpredictable. So you don't know what you're going to meet," he added. They met a range of challenges during their patrols, including floods, swamps and encounters with wild animals such as boars and foxes.
Luckily, in 2022, drones came to help their patrol work. "Human workers can patrol up to about 20 power towers a day, but with the help of drones, we can cover nearly 100 towers," he said.
Ehemat Tohti also said that he didn't plan to retire. "I want to share my experience and skills with more people and keep expanding my knowledge."

A. There are less than 729 transmission towers in the desert.

【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要描述了 Ehemat Tohti 等电力工人每月穿越塔克拉玛干沙漠检修输电线的艰苦又重要的工作。
1. C 推理判断题。根据第二段“We need to cross the desert once a month ... The task is challenging, yet all worthwhile”可知,Ehemat Tohti 等电力工人需要穿过被称作“死亡之海”的塔克拉玛干沙漠检修输电线,以保证沙漠边缘的居民有稳定的供电,推测提及这个称谓主要是为了表明这份工作是危险的,也是非常重要的。故选 C。
根据第四段“The harsh environment ... easily cause frequent breakdowns of our motorcycles ... buried under the sand, often puncture the tires”可知,恶劣的环境、沙子下的树木根茎,都有可能导致摩托车的损坏。故选 C。
4. A 推理判断题。根据最后一段可知,Ehemat Tohti 没有计划退休,他要将自己的经验和技能传给更多的人,还要努力学习。由此可知他是一个勤奋好学的人。故选 A。
