Ⅴ.阅读理解
新素材 机器狗上泰山 In the Taishan Mountain scenic area in Tai'an, Shandong Province, a robotic dog was tested. Its main job was to carry heavy loads, such as garbage, acting as a “porter(脚夫)” on the mountain and reducing the need for human workers.
Every year, Taishan Mountain receives millions of visitors. These tourists produce nearly 24,000 tons of waste every year. The terrain(地形) in the Taishan Mountain made it harder and more costly to clean and transport the garbage as large machines couldn't be used and the garbage had to be collected by hand.
To solve this problem, the scenic area tested robotic dogs for waste collection. The tested robotic dogs were some of the fastest and most advanced industrial-grade quadruped(四足的) robots on the market. They could cross obstacles(障碍) easily, keep good balance, and carry heavy loads for a long time.
Tests were carried out over three days at the base, middle and top of the mountain. The robotic dogs, equipped with a shelf and cargo(货物) box that could carry 30 to 40 kilograms, were tested for climbing ability and load-bearing capacity(容量) on the challenging terrain.
Results showed that they could reach the top of the mountain from the base within two hours, while the average time for adult tourists not carrying a heavy load was around four hours. The robots could operate for four to six hours on a full charge. During the tests, the robotic dogs fit over 80 per cent of the mountain's terrain.
Many tourists were attracted by these robotic dogs. Wang Yang, a tourist from Heilongjiang Province, said, “I saw it climbing and took a photo with it. It's truly amazing.”
