The Greatest Scientist of the 20th Century
In June, 2019, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) launched a campaign to vote for "the Greatest Scientist of the 20th Century". Tu Youyou, China's first Nobel Prize winner in physiology or medicine, successfully entered the list of four candidates, together with three other outstanding scientists, Mary Curie, who discovered radium and polonium, Albert Einstein, a physicist who helped mankind understand the universe, and Alan Turing, the father of computers!
It is worth noting that Tu is the only living candidate and the only Asian of all the candidates. The campaign created a special introduction page for each candidate. On the page of Tu, the BBC listed three reasons for selecting her: She still holds scientific ideals in difficult times; she keeps moving forward while never forgetting to learn from the past; her achievements influence both the West and East.
In the end, Turing was elected by a high vote. In the final, host Chris Packham delivered a passionate speech on Turing's achievements: His gift to all mankind is our future!
Then, who was Alan Turing?
Alan Turing was a mathematician who broke Adolf Hitler's Enigma code system during World WarⅡ. It is thought that Turing and his fellow code - breakers shortened the war by several years.
During his life, he worked almost entirely in secret, and it wasn't until long after his death that the legacy (遗产) of his life and work came to light. His war - time efforts have a huge effect on the development of computer science and artificial intelligence. Alan Turing's contributions are far - ranging and path - breaking.
Turing died on June 7, 1954. Although Turing was only 42 years old at the time of his death, the achievements of science and technology in his short and strange career have been enjoyed by later generations. Today he is regarded as the most celebrated figure of the 20th century, a war hero and genius. People look up to him and crown him with the titles of "father of computer", "father of artificial intelligence", "father of decipher (破译)", etc.
