A
As a little boy, Nick Priest from the US, loved playing video games with his dad, Joe. They started off with Nick holding a controller(游戏手柄) and pretending to play, then moved on to Lego games and Mario Galaxy.
When Joe died of cancer(癌症), Nick was only 6. He didn't just lose his dad, but he also lost his gaming partner. That's when the “Power of Play” was born.
Nick started working on the project as a freshman(新生) in high school. Now a junior, he wants to bring “the power of play” to kids who have illnesses.
At first, Nick raised $1,000 to buy a few controllers. He invited volunteers to go to the local children's hospital and played games with kids one - on - one.
By doing interviews, Nick learned that kids in treatment(治疗) are often very lonely. They can't leave their rooms. He found a way that kids in hospital could play with each other. He told hospital officials about his idea. And together they developed a system where the kids on the same floor can communicate with each other while playing.
“Hospitals have many rules,” Nick said. “It took a long time but we finally got there!”
“Video games do not cure(治疗) any disease, but as my dad always said, ‘Laughter is the best medicine!’”

As a volunteer teacher, I travelled a long way to a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn't what I expected. It didn't look like a school at all. The school had only 3 rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and another for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level(水平). To my surprise, although the test was very easy, over half of them failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons, and reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard - working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better and we are now good friends.
