A Balanced Diet Is Better than Vitamin Pills
Nowadays, more and more people are taking vitamin supplements¹ for their health. However, the fact is that few people actually need them, according to a British expert, Dr Jane Clarke. She argues that the best way to stay healthy is keeping a balanced diet.
People are often persuaded to buy pills because they're worried that food has fewer nutrients² than it used to. They think the best source of vitamins is freshly picked produce³, and that everybody should grow their own fruit and vegetables and get them straight from the garden. However, people mainly rely on supermarket food that has been kept sometimes for months, and transported great distances.
But Clarke says, “Provided⁴ you have a balanced diet, including five portions⁵ of fruit or vegetables a day, your body doesn't need extra help from a supplement.”
“The fact is that you get far more vitamins from food than from a pill, because the body absorbs food better,” she adds.
So really, it's better just to have a balanced diet than to rely on pills. And as long as you're getting at least one portion of oily fish a week, you don't need a fish-oil supplement either.
That's not to say there's anything wrong with taking a supplement. But what does harm to people is that it's so easy to take much more than the suggested amount.
