(2024 广东深圳福田区期末)
Have you ever seen a super bright light that makes the whole night sky look like a big light bulb? And then a loud noise makes you jump? That’s lightning.
Lightning is special because it’s super hot. The temperature of lightning is much higher than that of the sun’s surface. And lightning can travel at a speed of 462 meters per second.
Although lightning seems cool, it can be really dangerous. There are more than four million lightning strikes(袭击) every day in the world. It can knock down trees, cause power outages, and even damage houses. Sometimes, it can start fires or hurt people and animals.
However, the power of lightning has inspired (启发) many scientists to learn more about electricity and how it works. One famous scientist, Benjamin Franklin, discovered that lightning is a form of electricity and invented the lightning rod (避雷针). A lightning rod is placed on top of tall buildings to reach up into the sky. When lightning strikes, it chooses the easiest path, which is the lightning rod. The rod then safely guides the lightning’s energy down into the ground, stopping damage to the building. Nikola Tesla invented the Tesla Coil in 1891. It helps us understand how electricity works. Now some scientists are even studying how to use lightning’s energy to power our houses one day!
So next time you see lightning, remember that it’s not just a show in the sky, but a powerful force of nature that scientists are still learning from today!

When the wind blows, tree leaves move with it. What if we could “catch” the energy made by these leaves? A French scientist thought about this and made the Wind Tree.
The Wind Tree is not a real tree. It just looks like one, with a white body and around 36 green “leaves”. The “leaves” are blades(扇叶) which can turn in the wind. When they turn, they create electricity, and then the machine collects it. The Wind Tree is like a wind turbine (涡轮机), but it’s much smaller. It’s about 5 to 10 meters tall and easy to build.
Usually, the Wind Tree can make 18,000 kWh of energy in a year. That’s enough to power a home of four people. If the wind is stronger, it can make a lot more electricity—about twice as much at most.
Wind turbines may hurt birds because they may hit the blades by accident. But the Wind Tree doesn’t have this problem. The loud wind turbines usually sit on hills far away from people. But the Wind Tree is quiet. People can have it in gardens or city parks.
16. Why did the French scientist make the Wind Tree?
A.To move tree leaves quickly.
B.To make more electricity.
C.To help wind blow strongly.
D.To make gardens beautiful.
17. What do we know about the Wind Tree in Paragraph 2?
A.It has about 36 blades.
B.It has a green body.
C.It is a kind of real tree.
D.It is difficult to build.
18.How much energy can a Wind Tree make at most in a year if the wind is stronger?
A.About 9,000 kWh. B.About 18,000 kWh.
C.About 27,000 kWh. D.About 36,000 kWh.
19.What does “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Wind Trees. B.Wind turbines.
C.Green leaves. D.Tree blades.
20.Which may be the best title of the article?
A.Powered by a Tree
B.Energy around Us
C.Save the Wind Tree
D.Facts about Real Trees
